26th November the date for the Autumn budget

We have looked online and as usual there are as many ‘experts’ disagreeing on what may or may not be contained in the budget, as there are areas where bills for the small business owner could increase.

It is exactly this amount of indecision that hurts business almost as much as the eventual, possible tax rises. It is entirely probable that at least some of us have already heard “Oh, that project/purchase [Delete as appropriate] is just being held until we see the fallout of the budget” well, only if you work in the world of SME’s who would have to make sacrifices (usually the amount we take home), being the least able to absorb cost increases.

We can all see the way that successive governments work – have an idea, then ‘leak’ this out to a friendly media outlet, judge the public’s reaction good or bad and then decide to implement or not. Rinse and Repeat. What we actually need is clear decision making and a sense of the end result not the current and previous apparent flip flopping.

Most of us, with notice, can cope with a Tax or Rate change, it may hurt, but changes can be made to accommodate. What we cannot cope with is the continuing periods of low buyer confidence in the market, watching this build back up again, only for another Government ‘idea’ to come out and bring doubt flowing back in.

For the SME, our only strength in this continuing low to zero growth, low confidence economy, lies in our size and flexibility, being able to change and adapt quickly to whatever the new reality becomes. Where larger companies take longer to change direction, this gives us a window of opportunity to exploit any gaps in the market.
