Is the Internet Crumbling around us?
Depending on how much time you spend reading articles and listening to Podcasts online, you may, or may not, have heard the term ‘Dead Internet’ mentioned. In short, the reasoning behind this comes from studies showing that a great percentage of what you see and read online is now written by AI or ‘bots’. These are specifically targeted to either annoy you and make you click to find out more or to agree with your world-view and again make you click to find out more. These are being targeted by algorithms that look at what you are watching, reading, buying or commenting on. Some have forecasted that there will be a tipping point when it will be basically ‘Bots’ commenting on ‘Bot’ written posts in order to trigger other ‘Bots’ to read the content.
Just today, I clicked on a story with the heading “Motorists told not to wash cars in September” being a car owner this naturally triggered the obvious response of “who is telling me not to do this!”. And again, it is almost certain that you will have experienced this more than once, when you read the actual story it has little to do with the heading. In this case it was a PR piece under the pretence of being ‘Green’ to generate attention to Alfa Romeo’s new Electric car range. Most of the time you cannot tell when something has been written by AI but if there was a candidate then this would be it. As an indication if you look at the commentators, generally, but not exclusively they will be a single line of text, seemingly positive “we love your informed information on this subject, your are obviously an expert” and again, generally, their accompanying image will be a lesser known Anime character.
The unfortunate truth is that, in reality, more of what you see and read online will be written by AI ‘Bots’ and to stand out in this, you need to make sure that your message, and the audience you are targeting match as precisely as possible. Simply sending an email with the heading “best deal ever” is probably not going to attract many customers.
