My business is slowing down, is it me or the economy?

Most experts agree that a definitive recession is unlikely in 2025 but the economic forecast and data do suggest that growth will be extremely sluggish, potentially even zero. With high interest rates, increasing costs and market uncertainties all conspiring to give your business quiet periods throughout the coming year.
When you are in one of these quieter periods, it is easy to panic but instead you should look at it as an opportunity to review your business plans, reconnect with clients, look for new marketing avenues and add products to your portfolio.
At very least the following should be on your ‘hot list’ to tackle.
- Review your business plan – Does your current strategy still match your business needs
- Analysis – Examine your sales reports, cost of acquisition and look for any potential issues.
- Identify the cause – Consider whether seasonal factors are to blame or are you missing potentials in your client pipeline.
- Take time to reconnect with your customers – Reach out to past and existing clients to ask for testimonials, feedback or, more importantly, referrals.
- Look at your contingency planning – Can you prepare your business for future quiet periods through financial buffering and strengthening your network.
Once you are happy that the basics are in place, you should then look at ways to generate more leads, whether this is through making sure your website is user-friendly, well optimised for the search engines and effectively communicates your value proposition. Is your social media presence working, are you engaging with your audience and sharing valuable content? And finally, make sure you nurture your network of contacts and build relationships for the future.
