The Joys of Working from Home – Part 2 Keep on Moving

The Joys? Of Working from Home – Part 2

Like a lot of UK-based companies, Creatively Yours has had to change and adapt the way that we work over the past year. So whether your office is in San Francisco, Sydney, or Saffron Walden you have had to become used to video calls and working from home which, in itself, has presented its own challenges.

At the beginning of the pandemic everyone was worried about being stuck at home with their families for long periods (thinking of those family Christmas’s) Oh, and the shortage of toilet rolls! However, as time went on some of our opinions and outlooks changed as companies were forced to adapt to remote working as this became the only way of working.

Remote working requires a mix of discipline and self-care. It may be easy to get carried away with your work without others reminding you to go on breaks, share a coffee and forget about life outside of work. What is often forgotten is those offices are great places for socialising and making connections with each other but, even with restrictions lifted, it is predicted that 70% of workers will be working remotely.

So here are our top 5 tips for your new remote working life:

A Comfortable Workspace

Keep on Moving

Breakaway from the Screen

Cook your way to Success

Keep your connections!

Keep on Moving

This new lack of mobility has been noted as having a dramatic toll on our health, and productivity, as our bodies are naturally designed to move and be in regular action. If you are lucky enough to live somewhere that allows for a pleasant morning walk, then this is a great way to start the day. For the rest of us, there are some simple changes to our working day inside the office that can help.

Use a Stand-up or Adjustable desk to allow you to stand or sit down again when you grow tired. Building yourself up to standing for half a day will improve your posture and circulation which alleviates the overall effects of sitting.

Set a timer, there are several available for both Android, Google, and Mac such as Break Timer to remind you to stand, stretch or even wander around the office to workout those back muscles.

Walking meetings are a great, and simple change to make, forget about stuffy boardrooms and take it outside, many have found that ‘stand-up’ meetings are far more productive. Perhaps for the next video call, you could take this on your phone and walk while talking shop, it all helps to keep your body moving.

Subtlety stretching at your desk – be confident. Nobody will blink an eye if you do some casual stretches a few times a day at your desk. Simple exercises such as Shoulder Raises, Neck Stretches, Leg Raises and Arm Raises will all help.

A study presented recently found that moving and stretching for 30 – 60 minutes each day had an average performance boost of 15%, with most employees feeling that their time management, mental performance, and ability to meet deadlines improved on the days that they exercised. And we do not mean high impact exercise, a stretching class like Yoga gives your body time to move and realign.

In our next blog, we will look at the importance of taking regular breaks away from the glowing draw of your screens.
