Why the Economy is stuttering again!
Amidst the flood of news surrounding local elections and their potential impact on central government officials, the business community finds itself holding its breath, hesitant to commit to further spending until the repercussions become clear.
This pattern seems to repeat itself with every political event – be it local elections, general elections, budgets, or interim budgets, the cat at number 10 is losing its appetite, and the economy is stuttering. This can ultimately be traced back to a profound lack of faith in the political class’ ability to deliver the economic growth and stability that businesses desperately seek.
At its core, the primary issue revolves around Economic Policies and Regulation, whether at the local or national level. At its simplest, the issue lies in balancing policies that favour lower business taxes and deregulation, which can stimulate investment and growth, against those that advocate for higher taxes and stricter regulations, leading to increased costs for businesses but potentially enhancing government spending in sectors that might benefit the economy and businesses in alternative ways.
Regardless of your political stance or where you stand in the debate over regulation and taxes, the essential element currently lacking is confidence. Should you, as a business owner, halt investments while waiting for a potential economic upturn, or should you invest, hoping that the recovery is just around the corner? The prolonged stagnation in economic growth does little to inspire confidence in either choice, leaving us all in a state of uncertainty.
Furthermore, when consumer confidence is factored in, the situation becomes even clearer. Concerns about job security lead to a natural inclination to delay significant purchases and cut back on spending, a trend that hits retail and service industries particularly hard.
As owners of SMEs, there isn’t much we can do right now except stay informed about these challenges and strategise accordingly, but It is important to note that there are organisations you can join that do have influence in government. Ensure you participate in every election; you can’t expect to be heard if you do not raise your voice.
