5 Things a small business should avoid – Part 5 Balancing Quality with Growth

Creatively Yours website design Great Yarmouth and Kettering

In common with a lot of our customers, we are a growing SME business and as such are currently or have previously experienced a number of the same issues. These are many and varied, as is working for yourself, but in this series of posts, we will look at 5 things that we think are key to building a growing business.

1.Single Client Dependency

2.Money and Accounts Management

3.Fatigue

4.Founder Dependency

5.Balancing Quality with Growth

In our previous blogs we have looked at the importance of having a breadth of customers with different sized projects and in our follow-on blogs in the same series, we focused on the need to bring in expertise to help with money management, the need for the business owner to take a break occasionally or even the business carrying on should the worst happen.

Today’s blog looks at the risks involved in balancing growth, either planned or worse a sudden need to upscale to meet demand, with maintaining quality and service.

Even when a business has avoided being overly founder dependant and has controlled its accounts, there comes a time when you need to grow to the next level. Sometimes though, it can seem that the issues from growth appear to balance or even outweigh the benefits. Regardless of whether you are selling a product or a service, there comes a time when something must be sacrificed to allow things to scale up. It may mean that you, as the business owner, are not able to manage every client relationship or inspect every nut, bolt, or widget that you produce.

It is an unfortunate reality, that it is this personal attention to detail and customer relationship building that makes businesses successful. This, therefore, means that many small business owners find themselves keeping these habits, sometimes to the detriment of the company’s onward development. All you need to keep in mind is that there is a great deal of middle ground between offering a poor product or service and a damaging obsession with quality. It is up to the business owner to chart a course towards a compromise that allows for growth without hurting the brand reputation they have worked hard to build up.
