Why are visitors not buying from me? – Part 2
In the last blog, we looked at the first, and arguably the biggest loss of purchases which was complicated, confusing, or difficult to follow website or sales process. We discussed the fact that there are dozens of articles and reports online where you can find the latest, most up-to-date statistics and complicated information on visitor behaviour and how our blog is not one of them.
From reading through these articles and reports, and comparing them directly with our customers’ feedback, we have narrowed these down to the core issues, which account for the bulk of visitors not buying from you.
In this blog we will focus on the second largest reason why customers do not purchase from you namely:
Is your website old-fashioned, unprofessional or using outdated imagery?
But look out for our last blog in the series, which relates to the ease which people can search on your site for that perfect product or gift.
Does the look & feel of your website give the right impression? Most sites, if you strip away the imagery, actually do not have a lot of other content. So what are your photos saying about you? It takes less than a second to make a first impression and, in the same vain, an amateurish or unprofessional looking site can often instantly make potential customers wary of giving you personal or credit card details, even if your store is completely legitimate.
Aside from being uninviting to customers, a website that has clearly been built without professional knowledge that has missing images, buttons that go nowhere or that are hard to find will, inevitably, make potential customers reluctant to engage with you or your website.
The further implication, rightly or wrongly, is the signal that your website sends that you do not care and worse that you are unable to update or repair the site, implying that the business is struggling. Either of these viewpoints might well be wrong but in the end, no one will buy from a business that does not bother or may not be open for much longer.
Fundamentally your website does not need to be the very latest, all singing, all dancing, bespoke coded, multi-thousand pound investment, but that does not mean that with work you cannot have a clean, well-designed site that rewards the customer with a well thought out and simple purchase process.
In our next blog, we will look at the last area where a good website can fall down and miss out on that important sale – your search system and results page.
